Nothing ruins a relaxing weekend faster than a sudden plumbing disaster. While some plumbing issues build up over time, others happen in the blink of an eye. Knowing what to do in the first five minutes can save your home from severe water damage.

Here are four common emergencies and your immediate action plan:

1. Burst Pipes

A burst pipe can release gallons of water into your home in minutes.

  • Immediate Action: Locate your home's main water shut-off valve immediately and turn it clockwise to stop the water flow. Turn on your lowest faucet to drain the remaining water from the system.

2. The Overflowing Toilet

This is the emergency everyone dreads.

  • Immediate Action: Don't try flushing again! Reach behind the toilet and turn the shut-off valve (usually located near the floor) to stop the tank from refilling.

3. Blocked Drains Causing Backup

If water is coming back up through your kitchen or bathroom sinks, you have a severe blockage in your main line.

  • Immediate Action: Stop using all water in the house. Chemical drain cleaners will not fix a main line backup and can actually damage your pipes. Image

4. Water Heater Leaks

A leaking water heater can cause massive flooding and electrical hazards.

  • Immediate Action: Turn off the cold water supply valve above the tank. If it is an electric heater, turn off the breaker. If it is a gas heater, turn off the gas supply line.

Golden Rule: Never try to DIY a major plumbing emergency. Once the water is shut off, call in the experts.
